Savvas was born in Nicosia, Cyprus in 1994. At his early teenage years, he realized his deep passion for music and decided to buy his first guitar and start taking music lessons. From the very first day, Savvas would spend many hours every day practicing and exploring the instrument. In a very short time, he was able to play convincingly popular music styles and started performing with bands at different events in Cyprus. After about three years of experience with the guitar, Savvas listened for his first time a live jazz performance of the Cypriot saxophonist Charis Ioannou. Instantly amazed by what he heard, he started exploring the world of Jazz and realized that this was the music style that suited his personal taste the most.
Since then, Savvas is taking jazz lessons from local jazz musicians and educators, attends jam sessions and seminars from world class musicians such as Pasquale Grasso, Chris Byars and others, and transcribes and analyses the music.
I have been interested in the Bachelor of Music programme with specialization in Jazz guitar at Codarts University for the Arts for a very long time, since many music educators that I have studied with highly recommend it, and after I had attended outstanding live performances by some of Codarts graduates I felt that the exceptional comments that I got about Codarts are true based on the outcome of what I witnessed. One other reason that I wish to pursue my studies at Codarts, is that it is placed in Rotterdam where many jazz sessions take place every day. Based on the factors mentioned earlier, I am confident that this Bachelor’s programme is the ideal choice for me, in order to achieve my professional and personal goals.
My introduction to instrument playing came at the age of fourteen when I bought my first guitar. Very soon, music became a vital and indispensable part of my life. This passion has never left me, thus I decided to pursue my studies in Music at the Bachelor level, and dedicate my life exploring it and keep learning more about it. After a long search of my musical identity, I have identified that what fascinates me the most is musical improvisation. I am very confident that Jazz is the style of music that excites me the most, since it employs spontaneous expression; a style that is very close to my heart and future musical aspirations. As such, I have decided to pursue a degree in Music with specialization in Jazz, which I am certain will be both very enjoyable and will assist me in my future career goals.
My plan during my studies, is to gain as much knowledge and experience as possible. I aim to attend a lot of music events, meet many jazz musicians and hopefully make a name in the jazz scene in the Netherlands, by playing at live music performances. I realize that studying music in an academic context is vital for my development as a musician, but I strongly believe that knowledge and information should be put into practical application too, in order to become an organic part of my music. I believe that Codarts is the best place to provide me with the practical, hands-on experiences that I wish to gain during my music studies, since it encourages its students to play as much music as possible.
I understand that the programme I choose to follow is intense, but I am an extremely hard-working, consistent and disciplined person, and these qualities combined with my love for music will help me meet the expectations of the programme. I hope you will consider my application and allow me to pursue my studies in Rotterdam.
